Detroit Style Coney Hot Dog
When it comes to food, Detroit is best known for its coney dogs. This beloved local dish consists of a steamed hot dog nestled in a soft bun, topped with chili, mustard, and diced onions. The chili is made with ground beef and no beans, giving it a distinct flavor that sets it apart from other chili dog recipes.
The origins of the Detroit coney dog are disputed, but one theory is that it was created by Greek immigrants who came to the city in the early 1900s. Whatever its history, the coney dog has become an icon of Detroit culture, and there’s nothing more satisfying than enjoying one on a warm summer day. Or and cold winter’s night!
If you’re looking for a taste of Detroit, be sure to try a coney dog from one of the city’s many iconic eateries. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even make your own at home. Just remember, when it comes to this local favorite, the secret is in the sauce.
Ingredients:
- ground beef
- white onion
- fresh garlic
- tomato puree
- yellow mustard
- regular chili powder
- salt
- ground cumin
- paprika
- smoked paprika
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- freshly ground black pepper
- a few pinches of sugar
Instructions:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain any excess fat and remove from heat. Add the onion, garlic, tomato puree, mustard, chili powder, salt, cumin, paprika, smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and sugar. Stir until well combined. Cook for another minutes, or until the sauce is thickened.
- Preheat a steamer or boiling water in a large pot. Cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise and add them to the steamer basket or boiling water. Steam or cook for about 5 minutes, or until cooked through.
- To assemble the dogs, place 2-3 spoons of chili on a bun. Top with a hot dog half and diced onions (if desired). Serve immediately.
- Enjoy!
An easier option is to use a bought can of chili sauce without beans. It is of course not as good but if you are in a pinch for time it will do. Just heat the canned sauce on the stove until bubbling, add the hot dog halves to it and let simmer for a few minutes. Serve as above.
